Google Chrome VS Microsoft Edge: Which is faster?

The official launch of Windows 10 also brought Microsoft's new web browser, Microsoft Edge. It has a lighter design, is extremely fast, and also incorporates Cortana features.

Microsoft Edge improves on everything we hate about Internet Explorer, but how does it compare to Google's Chrome, one of the most used web browsers in the world today?

Recently, the foreign technology website mashable compared the two on a HP Spectre X360 laptop, running a series of benchmark tests on a 2.2GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 8GB of memory to see whether the new Microsoft Edge browser is faster or whether the two are on par.

Throughout the process, each web browser was tested with a fresh installation, without any extensions added to slow it down, and the history and cache were reset after each test. There are two important things to note: Google Chrome comes with a pre-installed Adobe Flash. We did not disable it in our benchmarks because every normal user downloads it.

Finally, all tests were performed three times and the average scores were taken.

Futuremark Peacekeeper

Peacekeeper is a free online browser testing program released by Futuremark, a well-known software testing company. It mainly measures the performance of the browser by testing JavaScript functions. Through it, you can see various detailed test data of the browser. The higher the Peacekeeper score, the better the overall performance of the browser.

From the direct comparison in the above images, you can clearly see that Google Chrome is better than Microsoft Edge in terms of speed and overall performance.

Winner: Google Chrome

SunSpider JavaScript

SunSpider is another JavaScript benchmark, but unlike peackeeper, it only tests JavaScript and does not test other aspects. This software was developed by Apple 's WebKit team in 2007 and is a commonly used benchmark for comparing web browsers. Here we learn more precise data.

In the test, we used the latest version 1.0.2, and the following are the test results (the lower the score, the better).

In this round of testing, Microsoft Edge beat Google Chrome with an average of 103.5, which shows that it is better able to "handle real performance problems encountered by developers" (this is a real evaluation from SunSpider).

Winner: Microsoft Edge

V8 Benchmark Suite-Version 7

This is a JavaScript benchmark developed by Google itself, which is used to test the performance of Chrome's JavaScript. So in theory, it should support Google Chrome more, but we can still take a look at the performance of Microsoft Edge. The higher the score, the better.

As you can see from the chart above, Google Chrome wins, but only by a narrow margin.

Real-world speed

This benchmark will give you a more intuitive view of the web browsing speed of the two. We will calculate and compare the time taken by opening three websites: Mashable.com, NewYorkTimes.com and Facebook.com. Here are the results of the test.

From the above, we can see that Google Chrome wins with an extremely slight advantage, but this slight difference is so slight that almost no one can notice it in the world experience.

Google is still the best, but there are prerequisites

So what can we conclude from the above results? Google Chrome is faster than Microsoft Chrome, but only if you don't add any extensions. When you add those extensions, Google Chrome slows down.

So Microsoft Edge isn’t bad. It’s a very capable browser and after testing it, I really like it. If IE is giving us a bad impression, Microsoft Edge will completely change your mind.
