We did an experiment on how it feels to update an old iPhone to iOS 10

In recent years, Apple has been unable to convince users to trust its updated iPhone and iPad systems. Past iOS updates have caused chaos on older iPhones and iPads. On Tuesday, some of the earliest enthusiastic users of iOS 10 were once again paralyzed by the update system.

However, the situation has improved now, and users seem to be able to safely update older iPhone systems to iOS 10.

Not only did Apple announce that the early vulnerabilities of iOS 10 have been fixed, but users also found that the new iOS 10 is really safe for users to use after trying iOS 10 on four older iPhones. After trying it out, users found that the fixed iOS 10 only slightly slowed down the operation of some important functions, but it would not have much impact on normal use. In addition, after testing, users also found that iOS 10 did not have a significant impact on the battery of the device.

Tests have found that users may like iOS 10 because it allows users to use old phones after updating the system as if they were using a new phone, even if they did not buy an iPhone 7. iOS 10 can help users arrange photos, add more interesting effects to Messages, and provide a much-needed design update for Apple Music. It also supports iPhone 5, iPad mini 2 and fourth-generation iPad upgrades.

Trial Results

In order to test the performance of iOS 10, the testers tested various versions of iPhones, installed the latest version of iOS 9 on these different iPhones, and then adjusted the time of each system. The test included starting and unlocking the phone, taking pictures, and enabling Safari. The testers tested each phone separately and compiled the results.

In addition, the testers also tested battery life and performed the same stress test as the new iPhone 7, setting uniform lighting and opening web pages using Safari over WiFi.

Next, the testers installed iOS 10 on each version of iPhone and conducted the same test.

The results show that older iPhones have slowed down in ways that may be hard to detect. Here's what's going on:

First, when the phone is enabled or unlocked, all versions of the iPhone slow down by between 4 and 10 percent, but the iPhone 5s slows down the most, by about 40 percent.

Second, after launching Safari, the running speed will drop by up to 24% - but at most it is just a matter of milliseconds, and in fact, the running speed will generally drop as the device gets older.

Third, when taking and viewing photos, testers found that the speed increased by 3% to 22%.

Fourth, in terms of battery performance, several mobile phones using iOS 10 have increased their operating speed by 1% to 3%.

Apple said its testing showed that iOS 10 was as fast as iOS 9 on most devices, but it did not mention whether battery performance was affected differently.

One thing that's hard to quantify about speed is that it's still hard to determine how quickly the Photos app installed on an updated device can scan your photo album to recognize faces and store memories. My iCloud Photos album is very large, with more than 100,000 photos. So it took a long time to sort and categorize them. To preserve battery power and reduce the amount of time you open the Photos app on a daily basis, iOS 10 can only scan photos when the device is locked or plugged in, such as at night.
