iPhone 7 leaked again! The lens uses low-purity sapphire glass

  Apple has claimed to use sapphire glass to protect the camera on recent generations of iPhones. However, recently, the well-known YouTube channel JerryRigEverything discovered that sapphire glass was indeed used, but the purity was very low.

After JerryRigEverything conducted a scratch resistance test on the iPhone 7 camera, it was found that obvious permanent scratches appeared on the surface of the camera at a hardness level of 6, which is equivalent to the hardness of ordinary glass, while the hardness of sapphire is generally 8-9.

In order to find out the truth, JerryRigEverything claimed to have spent hundreds of dollars to borrow an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and an electron microscope from a university laboratory to conduct a detailed analysis of the material on the surface of the camera. It was discovered that the Apple iPhone 7 does use a sapphire glass lens, but the problem is that the purity is low and some carbon impurities are mixed in, which greatly reduces its scratch resistance.

In addition, JerryRigEverything also found that this is not only the case with the iPhone 7, but also with the lenses of the iPhone 5s, 6, 6s, and SE. When the Mohs hardness is around 6, scratches will be left on them, which means that the sapphire lenses used in the above models are all impure.
