US research team uses iPhone to detect cancer: 99% accuracy
Apple's grand plans to enter the health care field with the iPhone and Apple Watch are no longer a secret, but Apple is not the only one trying to integrate smartphones into medical research. Recently, a research team from Washington State University, led by Assistant Professor Lei Li, has developed a portable laboratory supported by smartphones that can quickly test biological samples of cancer patients with an accuracy rate of up to 99%. Washington State University said that the portable laboratory can test eight different samples at the same time with an accuracy rate of up to 99%, which is unprecedented. Professor Li pointed out that their portable cancer detection laboratory can detect human interleukin-6 (IL-6), a cancer biomarker present in lung cancer, prostate cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer and epithelial cancer. "Our eight-channel spectrometer allows eight different samples to be tested at the same time, or the same sample to be tested eight times under different conditions. This increases the efficiency of our equipment." Li said that the professor has now submitted a provisional patent application for this invention. Li's smartphone spectrometer is not the first in the world. Compared with other products, the biggest advantage of the former is that it can test eight samples at the same time with an accuracy rate of up to 99%. Li's smartphone spectrometer will have a huge impact on global cancer detection and research because, in addition to being used in U.S. hospitals and clinics, it is lightweight enough to bring good news to patients in areas around the world where cancer detection is difficult. "Such a spectrometer will be particularly useful for clinics and hospitals that have a large number of samples but lack on-site laboratories, or for doctors who practice medicine overseas or in remote areas," he said. "They can't carry an entire laboratory with them, so they need a portable and efficient device." Currently, Li's spectrometer can be used with the iPhone 5, and the team is working to adapt it to all models of smartphones.
