IDC pointed out in its latest data report that in the first nine months of 2016, the sales of smartphones with waterproof functions in Western Europe increased by 45.2% year-on-year, while the shipments of smartphones without waterproof functions decreased by 17%. In the first nine months of 2016, the shipments of waterproof smartphones reached 22.5 million, accounting for 23% of the total smartphone shipments. The increase in the shipments of waterproof smartphones is mainly due to the launch of Apple iPhone 7 series, Samsung and Huawei series waterproof devices. Device damage caused by liquid entering the device has become the second largest killer of smartphones. Among all repaired smartphones, 35% of the phones are damaged to varying degrees due to liquid entering the device. Users usually have to pay high repair fees to repair such damaged phones, and mobile phone manufacturers, operators, and retailers will also bear different degrees of costs, and the environment may also be affected. IDC estimates that more than 100,000 smartphones in Western Europe are damaged every day due to water or other liquids entering the device, and the annual loss is expected to exceed US$10.7 billion. IDC researcher Francisco Jeronimo said: "95% of smartphones are unusable due to accidental damage. Many manufacturers compete by lowering prices, but some manufacturers improve the user experience by improving screen durability, waterproof performance and other factors. Screen damage and non-waterproof performance are the two most common factors in smartphone damage." Jeronimo also added: "Smartphones have become everyday devices, but the more frequently they are used, the greater the risk they bear. The device may be more likely to be broken.
