Nokia accuses Apple of infringing 32 technology patents

In the early morning of December 22nd, Beijing time, Nokia said on Wednesday that it has filed multiple lawsuits against Apple, accusing it of infringing on 32 of the company's technology patents.

The lawsuits, filed in courts in Dusseldorf, Mannheim and Munich, Germany, and in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, cover patents for displays, user interfaces, software, antennas, chipsets and video coding. Nokia said in a statement: "Since Apple agreed to license a portion of the Nokia patent portfolio in 2011, it has rejected Nokia's requests to license other patent inventions that are used in many of Apple's products." Earlier, Apple on Tuesday took legal action against Acacia Research and Conversant Intellectual Property Management, accusing them of conspiring with Nokia to extort excessive and unfair patent licensing revenues from the company. Apple, Acacia Research and Conversant Intellectual Property Management did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Nokia also did not respond to requests for comment on its lawsuit against Apple. Industry insiders said the lawsuits filed by Nokia and Apple could mean a resurgence of the "smartphone patent wars" that began five years ago, when Apple filed a series of patent infringement charges against its rival Samsung around the world, and the two sides subsequently won and lost in these lawsuits. Nokia was once a dominant mobile phone manufacturer in the global market, but after Apple launched the first iPhone in 2007, the market began to shift towards smartphones, and Nokia missed the tide of this industry change. Two years ago, Nokia sold its mobile phone business to Microsoft, while retaining the telecommunications network equipment business and a portfolio of patents. But this year, Microsoft sold Nokia's feature phone business to a new company called HMD Global, which reached a 10-year patent licensing agreement with Nokia and will continue to produce low-priced Nokia phones in the future, and plans to launch new Nokia smartphone models in mid-2017.
