Major breakthrough in non-volatile memory: expected to completely replace existing hard drives

Russia's Sputnik News reported on January 16 that Oleg Tretyakov, a researcher at the Far Eastern Federal University of Russia, as a member of the international research team of Russia, Japan, the United States and Germany, discovered the skyrmion Hall effect, which makes it possible to manufacture faster, cheaper, more reliable and non-volatile electronic storage devices.

The scientists published their work in the journal Nature Physics. Oleg Tretyakov said that skyrmions could be the basis of future magnetic storage technology.

Skyrmions can be spaced just a few nanometers apart, while modern hard drives have magnetic domains that are at least 100 nanometers apart. In addition, skyrmion-based memory could retain information even without power.

Tretyakov's colleague Alexander Samardak of Russia's Far Eastern Federal University explained that scientists are now developing new data storage and processing systems based on skyrmions. Such storage components are cheaper to manufacture, work faster and are more reliable.

In the future, they could be used to produce computers, smartphones and sensors that can work for long periods of time without needing to be recharged.
