Man's Samsung phone overheated and became scrapped: He was forced to sign a nondisclosure agreement during after-sales service
Samsung's new flagship Galaxy S8 is scheduled to be officially released tonight, which is considered an important press conference for Samsung to reshape its brand image. However, just 24 hours before the press conference, Samsung was not at peace. In addition to a fire in a retail store in Singapore, foreign media now broke the news that it forced users to sign a "gag agreement" in the after-sales process. According to reports, the Samsung gag agreement incident began on February 23 this year, also in Singapore. At that time, a man's newly purchased Samsung S7 Edge phone, which had been less than a week old, overheated and eventually died. For this reason, the man went to Samsung after-sales to apply for a replacement. However, the man was asked to sign a confidentiality agreement, which stipulates that "Samsung will provide a replacement for a brand new phone, but the premise is that the user cannot directly or indirectly (including anonymously or under a pseudonym) produce, publish, disseminate and reprint negative news and comments about criticism, humiliation, etc. against Samsung (including Samsung products, services, employees, agents or executives) to any media (including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter or any Internet platform) or any person or entity." It is reported that the man finally refused to sign the agreement, and Samsung also refused to replace his new phone. Later, the man sent an email to Samsung to question the matter, but the other party disappeared after replying "will investigate", and there has been no response since then. Until March 24, the man left a message on Samsung Singapore's official Facebook saying that he had received a reply, saying that the agreement was "standard". Outside analysis, Samsung's request for after-sales users to sign a non-disclosure agreement is likely to avoid a recurrence of the Note 7 incident, which would have an impact on the upcoming S8, but this practice is obviously more offensive. If a user's smartphone has serious problems within the after-sales period, it should be replaced unconditionally, rather than setting a threshold.
