Lizard Squad: Microsoft and Sony are idiots

For many gamers, this Christmas was a bad one. Under the attack of the hacker group Lizard Squad, Microsoft's Xbox Live and Sony's PSN were both destroyed. Who is this hacker group and what is the purpose of attacking the game server? Dailydot contacted members of Lizard Squad to try to understand the reason why the group launched this attack.

Before this hacking attack, Lizard Squad had organized several large-scale operations. At the beginning of the year, they attacked Blizzard and Sony's servers; a few months ago, they hacked the Vatican's website; recently, they launched a cyber attack on North Korea. In previous hacking attacks, Lizard Squad has expressed political purposes. So, what is the purpose of this attack?

In an interview, Omari, a member of Lizard Squad, said that the simplest reason was that they were making a joke. At the same time, they also wanted to expose the incompetence of Microsoft and Sony and prove that those who claimed to stop them were liars.

"Microsoft and Sony are dumb, computer monkeys," Omari said. "If their employees knew what they were doing, they might have better luck. For example, if they went to prison and hired people who were convicted of hacking, they might be able to deal with cyber attacks better."

"If I worked at Microsoft or Sony and had a big budget, I could stop this attack," said Cleary, another member of the team. "I would buy more bandwidth, some special equipment, and configure it. It's just a matter of programming skills. To deal with such a large-scale attack, they need to invest millions of dollars, but for Sony and Microsoft, that's not a problem at all."

Cleary said the attack was successful because they had direct access to the network's infrastructure. "We have some people on our team who have special skills, and we managed to access some of the core routing equipment on the Internet," he said. "Some of the equipment we touched was connected to undersea cables that speed up Internet connections between the United States and Europe; some of the equipment was in the middle of the ocean, processing 100G per second Internet connections. The Russian government cannot carry out such a large-scale attack."

They also say that DDoS attacks are not as easy as people say. "A lot of people say, we are not hackers, and DDoS is not a hacker attack. To do such a large-scale attack, you need to have a lot of money or be able to hack into a lot of computers," Cleary said. "You can't launch a DDoS attack from your home computer. That doesn't work anymore."

In this hacker attack, Kim Dotcom, the founder of cloud storage service Mega and a well-known hacker, once mediated. He provided 3,000 Mega coupons to Lizard Squad, hoping that they would stop attacking Xbox Live and PSN. These coupons can be sold on the black market and are worth $300,000. However, Lizard Squad only suspended the attack. After receiving the coupons, they launched a new round of attacks.

After Christmas, Lizard Squad announced that they stopped attacking PSN and Xbox and turned their attention to the anonymous network Tor. Lizard Squad's attack on Tor attracted the attention of the hacker group Anonymous. Anonymous warned Lizard Squad not to attack the Tor network. "We don't care about the garbage networks of big companies, but we care about the flow of information in the third world." Anonymous said on Twitter.
