Apple software engineer tells the story behind the "Security Code AutoFill" feature

According to foreign media AppleInsider, Apple software engineer Ricky Mondello told the story behind one of the most popular features of iOS 12: "Security Code AutoFill" on Twitter.

If you’ve ever gone through the pain of two-factor authentication, you probably know how useful Apple’s Security Code AutoFill feature is. Instead of having to manually enter a code into a form in apps like Safari, this feature automatically reads the verification code directly from a text message. This feature is available on both iOS and macOS.

Apple software engineer Ricky MonDELLo recently responded to a tweet praising Apple for this feature.

It turns out that the security code autofill feature was a side idea that the developers came up with while working on a “more ambitious” project. Although the more ambitious project ultimately had to be canceled, the team decided to move forward with the security code autofill project.

Mondello praised their team for finally getting the feature launched, saying the end result came from execution and teamwork. They are particularly proud of the feature for putting privacy first.

“Years later, I’m still so proud of the team for making this feature happen,” Mondello tweeted. “The team combined expertise from multiple areas and made it work on day one without asking the app & website developers a thing or showing your text messages to anyone. This still inspires me!”
