A comprehensive review of the new features of iOS 14.5: each one is a unique skill

The much-anticipated iOS 14 is finally about to usher in its biggest update! Many people previously thought that the launch conference would be held on March 23, but now there is news that it may be postponed to April. I have to say that Apple is really the king of delays. However, no matter how many delays there are, the upgrade of iOS 14.5 will be very big. Maybe everyone has already learned a little about the new features in iOS 14.5, so today we will review them again for you.

Automatically unlock iPhone with Apple Watch

This feature can be said to be forced by the epidemic, because the iPhone's Face ID facial recognition technology needs to scan the entire face, and it cannot be recognized when wearing a mask, so many people have to take off their masks to unlock their iPhones, but doing so will undoubtedly expose themselves to the risk of infection. Or, as a second choice, use traditional password input to unlock, but generally speaking, these two methods are not so convenient.

iOS 14.5 can use Apple Watch to automatically unlock the iPhone. Simply put, when you turn over your wrist and the watch screen lights up, the iPhone will be unlocked. However, the specific steps still need further official information. It may be synchronous unlocking, or it may require clicking a button on the Apple Watch or iPhone.

ATT App Tracking Transparency

This feature is a new feature in APP Tracking Transparency, which means that all apps that want to track across apps must be "transparent" to let users know when and where the apps track their private data. Apple's wording is also quite harsh, saying "developers should not try to bypass this feature", otherwise they will be removed from the App Store.

The implication is that all cross-app tracking behaviors of all apps must be "transparent" to users and obtain their consent. This is of course a good move for protecting privacy, and it can also prevent some apps with bad intentions from snooping into users' privacy. Of course, some domestic apps will inevitably be impacted by this, because a large number of domestic apps have many cross-authorization situations. If they strictly follow the regulations of Apple's App Tracking Transparency, then the "gray area" will probably be cleared up.

Find My links to track non-Apple products

In the past, the Find My app could only track Apple's own products, but starting with iOS 14.5, the coverage of this feature may be greatly increased. Apple announced that in 2021, any third-party device that supports Find My can be found using Find My, which means that any third-party manufacturer can apply to join the Find My network.

AirTag wireless tracker

In fact, this is the product that Apple has delayed the most in recent years. News about it was reported as early as mid-to-late 2019, but there has been no follow-up until now. AirTag is a wireless tracker, which is equivalent to making Apple's Find My function into a small hardware, just like a keychain, which can be hung on anything you want, such as keys, kettles, headphone boxes or other small scattered items.

When AirTag is within a certain distance from you, it will automatically remind you, or you can check the location of AirTag at any time in the corresponding APP, which may be the native Find My, or Apple may create a new APP specifically for AirTag. And because it uses ultra-wideband technology, the positioning distance can even be accurate to 10cm, which is the most reliable for indoor use. For those who often forget where they put their things, AirTag is almost a must-buy artifact.

Game controller scalability support

In iOS 14.5, it can support connecting to the controllers of Sony PlayStation 5 DualSense and Microsoft Xbox Series X. There is nothing much to say about this. It greatly expands the game scalability of iPhone and iPad. Various large-scale games can be played with controllers, which is undoubtedly more exciting than touch screen operation. However, the premise is that you own these game consoles, otherwise you have to buy the controller yourself. But fortunately, the controller itself is not expensive, and there is no financial pressure even for ordinary users.
