At this year's WWDC, Apple introduced a feature called Private Relay, which is designed to thwart companies that track you across the internet by routing your data through two servers, one owned by Apple and the other by a third party. When Apple introduced the service, they promised that it wouldn't slow down your connection or "impact your performance," which, frankly, was hard to believe. Now early testing suggests that promise is indeed too good to be true. Google employee Thomas Steiner tested the service and showed the results with and without a proxy service. The data showed that the download speed dropped from 400Mb/sec to 180Mb/sec, while the latency increased from 3ms to a lagging 78ms. However, given that this feature is still in the Beta testing phase, it may deliver on its promise when it is officially released. |
