WeChat and Alipay announce major changes

Good news! WeChat and Alipay announced to deepen interoperability with UnionPay QuickPass!

WeChat Pay has officially realized the mutual recognition and scanning of offline barcodes with UnionPay QuickPass App. WeChat mini-programs have gradually supported QuickPass payment. 85% of Taobao stores already support payment via QuickPass, Alipay, and QuickPass scanning.

On September 30, WeChat’s official public account “WeChat Party” released the “Announcement on Deepening Payment Cooperation and Interoperability between Tencent WeChat Pay and UnionPay QuickPass”, as follows:

To promote the development of the payment service market, based on user transaction security and mutual trust and reliability, Tencent WeChat Pay is promoting deeper interconnection and interoperability with UnionPay QuickPass at the payment and service levels. The current progress is as follows:

1. Payment interoperability

WeChat Pay and UnionPay QuickPass App have officially realized the mutual recognition and scanning of offline barcodes. Users can complete payment by scanning the WeChat payment code through the UnionPay QuickPass App in provincial capital cities across the country;

2. Service Interoperability

The Cloud QuickPass App fully supports recharge services for Q coins, QQ music and Tencent video;

WeChat mini programs have gradually supported Cloud QuickPass payment. The first batch of scenarios included WeChat Reading, Tencent Video, Maoyan, JD.com, BBK, Luckin Coffee and other mini programs. The grayscale test of this capability started on September 22.

Tencent WeChat Pay and UnionPay QuickPass have conducted long-term open cooperation exploration, laying a solid foundation for accelerating and deepening interconnection. Previously, the two parties jointly promoted the cooperation between Tenpay, UnionPay and CCB, BOC, BOC, Ping An, CITIC and other banks, realizing the payment function of scanning WeChat payment code in mobile banking apps.

Next, WeChat Pay will continue to uphold an open attitude, take safety as the bottom line, actively expand more payment cooperation scenarios, provide users with safer and more convenient payment services, and help promote the high-quality development of the payment industry.

On October 2, Alipay’s official WeChat account released the progress of the interconnection with China UnionPay, as follows:

Openness and sharing are the basic spirit of digital development. In order to bring users a more diverse and convenient payment experience, Alipay is cooperating with China UnionPay to promote the interconnection and interoperability of online and offline multi-scenario payments under the principle of safety and order. The following progress has been made:

1. Open online scenarios to UnionPay QuickPass, covering 85% of Taobao merchants in the first batch

In August this year, Alipay completed the technical development of UnionPay Cloud QuickPass and gradually opened up online payment scenarios. The first transaction scenario opened was the Taobao platform. Currently, 85% of Taobao stores already support consumers to pay through Cloud QuickPass. Users who have installed the Cloud QuickPass APP can directly choose "Cloud QuickPass" to pay at the Alipay checkout counter after submitting an order for Taobao shopping.

2. Alipay and UnionPay QR code scanning mutual recognition

Alipay and China UnionPay began to communicate and explore closely based on barcode interoperability in 2020, and gradually promoted it after completing the pilot verification at the end of 2020. At present, payment code scanning mutual recognition has been realized in many cities across the country, including Beijing, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Chongqing, and Xi'an, and it is planned to cover all cities across the country in March next year.

In addition, Alipay has joined hands with UnionPay to promote open cooperation among 23 banks and institutions including ICBC, CCB, BOC, BOC, CMB, and CITIC Bank, supporting the payment function of Cloud QuickPass APP and various banks and institutions' APPs scanning Alipay payment codes.

Alipay and China UnionPay have always adhered to the concept of openness and win-win cooperation, and promoted openness and sharing in areas such as public payment and other livelihood services, online payment and offline barcode interoperability. The two parties will continue to explore the introduction of payment methods such as commercial bank APP and mobile phone Pay to provide users with more diversified and convenient payment services.
