User observation on how one-year-old babies use mobile devices

There is a principle called "predetermined usage" in interaction design, which means that for an interface or control, users should know how to use it as soon as they see it.

Therefore, we should design based on human instinct and intuition as much as possible. After observing the behavior of one-year-old babies, there are three well-known points to share with you:

Light up the phone screen

There is an iPhone and a Xiaomi at home. When the baby sees the two phones, he will definitely choose the iPhone and quickly press the Home button to light up the screen. When she got the Xiaomi, she would press the bottom of the screen hard. After trying several times without success, she would throw the Xiaomi away. I had taught her how to light up the screen at least five times. Maybe because her hands were small and her strength was weak, she would either press the lock button without aiming at it, or she would not press hard enough, and she was frustrated every time. (I have learned it now)

I don’t know whether the Home button on the iPhone will be cancelled in the future. If it is cancelled, Apple should have a revolutionary interactive alternative.

Videos and Photos

Because there are photos in the phone, she often clamors to look at the phone and the baby. After observing me swiping my finger on the screen to switch and tapping the Play button on the video 2 or 3 times, she can now operate it smoothly. When she sees a picture, she swipes left and right, and when she finds a white button on it, she knows to tap it with her finger.

Space Transition

Spatial transitions clearly tell the user where he is, where he came from and where he is going. Of course, they also indicate the transition and clearly tell the user what is happening.

Sometimes when she accidentally presses the Home button, she will return to the desktop. Thanks to the iOS spatial transition animation, she is clearly told what just happened and where the previous screen went. The use of dynamic effects to fill the middle process of page jump makes the transition more natural. Then, she will click on the application (photo) that was just reduced again. But when using Xiaomi, when she touched the Home button, the picture (photo) disappeared, and she could only ask me for help and asked me where the baby was.
